The Foundation has agreed to provide financial support to a third year PHD student, Luca Dondoni, at University College London (UCL). He is now in the ‘writing up phase’ of his PHD and is due to submit his thesis in September 2025.
The thesis investigates the metaphysics of physical reality in Plato’s Timaeus including the theory that all physical objects are aggregates of the four elements (fire, earth, water and air), each of which consists of geometric particles. As part of his thesis, Luca is exploring how the Timaean metaphysics of properties relates to a major challenge in the contemporary metaphysics of science concerning the integration of structural properties into a ‘power-based ontology’.
We are pleased to support PhD students such as Luca who have a keen interest in Plato and the Platonic Tradition, as the next generation of academics who will have responsibility for maintaining continued scholarship in this area.
